Round 2 (13 and 20 April, 2024)

Camp Tutors

Crystal Lam
Bachelor of Pharmacy, Year 4
“The camp has had a positive impact on my own English language skills. The constant interaction with students has challenged me to refine my communication skills and ensure clarity and accuracy in my language use. The camp’s emphasis on creative expression has also inspired me to explore new ways of using language to engage and inspire young learners. Overall, this camp has been a rewarding experience that allowed me to grow as an educator and deepen my understanding of the complexities of language acquisition. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a motivated and enthusiastic group of HKU students and engaged in such a meaningful activity for my community.”
Mercy Okoro
Bachelor of Social Sciences, Year 1
“Being able to meet new people from different backgrounds forced me to use more English. It not only built my confidence in using the language, but also allowed me to use it in a more fluent way and become an improved English speaker. Another big gain from the programme was the many friends I made. If it wasn’t this camp, I would have never met such amazing people. I have learned how to cooperate and improvise with them.”
Phyo Thiri Lwin
Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development, Year 1
“The English for U (E4U) Camp wove together language, culture, and connections. As an international student unfamiliar with Hong Kong’s local context, I craved insights. Interacting with local students and witnessing their enthusiasm on serving the community broadened my horizons, motivated me to bridge cultural gaps and learnt to appreciate education from a new angle. E4U’s blend of language, STEM, and cultural understanding inspired me. I will carry this interdisciplinary mindset into other areas of study. Motivated by E4U’s community spirit, I aim to give back. Language enrichment programs, volunteering, and mentorship – these experiences will shape my future endeavors. Beyond being a participant, I became a learner, a listener, and a bridge-builder.”

“The Camp provides chances for my students to reach out to the community and enjoy different out-of-classroom activities, and, more importantly, learn more English. My students become more open-minded in joining new activities and more confident in interacting with others in English. Thank you very much for HKU and for all the tutors who have arranged so many fun activities for my students. They are friendly and helpful. I really appreciate this opportunity.”
Mr. Josiah Lee
Teacher from
NLSI Peace Evangelical Secondary School
“It is a good idea for students to be exposed to university life and learn more about English. They gain a lot from this camp through all the fun activities, especially the STEM workshop, which they really enjoy. Students could get out of their own comfort zones and experience things they would never have had the opportunity to experience if they didn’t come to this camp. Our school is appreciated of the many positive things the students learned from this camp.”
Ms Chui
Teacher from
St. Francis of Assisi’s College
“The Camp helps promote the use of English in students’ daily lives. We appreciate the hard work of all camp tutors. They have tried their very best to let my students experience the fullest during the camp. Moreover, it is a great opportunity for my students to explore HKU and taste the university life, such as participate in different activities which only university students would be able to join. The students love the experience as they could experience things beyond the classroom.”

Suhandjaja Alexander Gaudi

“The programme strengthened my use of English in my daily life and beyond the classroom by allowing me to practice my language skills with the kids and other tutors. This program also encouraged me to be more confident in using English in real-life situations, and I feel that I am now more comfortable communicating in English with people from different backgrounds.”
Ben Cheng
Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, Year 4
“The biggest gains I received from this programme were the opportunities to interact with a diverse group of people, to develop my confidence and problem-solving skills, and to gain a sense of fulfilment from helping others. I enjoyed seeing the secondary school students learn and grow throughout the programme, and I felt proud of the work we accomplished as a team.”
Cheryl Leung
Bachelor of Arts, Year 3
“Being a local student, I only have a limited chance to speak English in daily life. In this programme, I have a lot of chances to practise my conversational English since I always had to  speak verbally with my team members. In the future, I hope to become a teacher. I strongly believe the learning experience I gained from the ‘English-for-U’ camp would be enable me to conduct classroom activities in real-life teaching situations”
