New! Talk Your Way Out of Any Hot Spot – Improving Your Impromptu English Speaking Skills
Mini Physical Theatre (MPT1/21-22)
Want to know how you can use your body language/movement for communication?
Looking for fun activities to widen your horizon?
Want to make friends from different cultural backgrounds?
If you say “yes” to any of the questions above, the “Mini Physical Theatre for HKU Students” is what you can’t miss.
Guided by Dr. Vicki Ooi, a well-known theatre educator and director, you will learn the basic principles of Physical Theatre and use the new found skills to devise a short performance of an extract from the play “Walking The Amazon”, a book-to-theatre adaption staged by AFTEC.
Ed Stafford, the author of “Walking The Amazon”, completed his first ever walk from the source to the mouth of the Amazon River in 860 days. Now you can join the director, Dr. Vicki Ooi and actors and crew put on one scene from the play. Because more than 300 dialects are used in the Amazon, you can speak in the language of your choice when you join the performance.
At the end of the workshop, YOU WILL HAVE:
- Learned the basic principles of physical theatre
- Been more aware of the use of body language/movement for communication

Effective Public Speaking (EPS1/21-22)
This compact and entertaining workshop will cover the fundamentals of two disparate topics: Public Speaking and Networking.
Both are vital to success in many enterprises today, not only commercial enterprises but in academia and socially too. Both require practice and even though some of us are apparent naturals at Public Speaking and at Networking the less gifted will be pleased to know that acquired skills and experience are frequently more important than innate raw talent. (Even Churchill was not a born orator.)
This workshop is for those who need to get out of their shell and get some experience under their belt. The course is entirely in English and will give all participants an opportunity to role play in a range of public speaking and networking scenarios. After the 6-hour workshop, you should be more proactive and confident when you stand in the limelight “on the stump” or in a “meet and greet” session.
Note: Participants will need to wear semi-formal clothes. No shorts or flip flops please; we want to make a good first impression. (BTW…Churchill didn’t wear flip flops!) Handouts will be issued for each activity. Mobile phones should be brought to class fully charged. One activity involves the use of a smart phone video if participants have this facility available.
At the end of the workshops, YOU SHOULD:
- Know the key factors for effective public speaking
- Have enhanced confidence in speaking to a larger audience
- Be more conversant with the “rules” and conventions of networking and socializing in a variety of contexts other than the workplace
- Feel more familiar with, and be at ease in networking environments
- Be more aware of some of the pitfalls that can be avoided while networking and socializing
