Effective Public Speaking (EPS2/18-19)
It seems that some people are just “naturals” when it comes to Public Speaking. They readily stand up in public, ooze confidence, instill enthusiasm and manage to say just the right thing at the right time. It seems they were born to be public speakers. Well, it’s not true. Nobody is born a “natural”. Public speaking requires practice. Some might be better than others but everybody has to acquire the skills through experience which over time brings confidence as well.
This course is for those who need to get out of their shell and get some experience under their belt. The course is entirely in English and will give all participants an opportunity to role play in a range of public speaking scenarios. It’s fun but at the same time challenging and rewarding. After this 6-hour workshop, you should become more proactive and confident when you have to stand in the limelight “on the stump”.
Note: Participants will need to wear semi-formal clothes. No shorts or flip flops to ensure a good first impression. Handouts will be issued for each activity. Mobile phones should be brought to class fully charged. One activity involves the use of smart phone video if students have this facility available.

Business Networking and Cocktail Party Etiquette (BNCP1/18-19)
We attend university to acquire the knowledge needed for employment which is formalized by degrees and certificates. Hand in hand with these formal academic skills, but just as important, is the acquisition of skills that help us network, socialize and make friends, acquaintances and contacts with whom we can bond, group, play and work with for happy and profitable relationships. This is not only for employment in the business and professional world but also in the wider everyday world beyond the 9 to 5 workplace. We are social animals and our success depends largely on our ability to get along and cooperate with everybody.
The purpose of this workshop is to look at the many networking and socializing conventions, “rules”, habits and attitudes we need to master in both formal and informal gatherings. Participants will investigate these conventions and practise them in an enjoyable and relaxing environment and culminate with a networking cocktail party.
This workshop is both enjoyable and informative and is open to all those who feel they want to build on their social and networking skills for all walks of life.
At the end of the workshop, you will:
- be more conversant with the “rules” and conventions of networking and socializing in a variety of contexts other than the workplace
- be more confident and at ease in these environments
- be aware of some of the pitfalls that can be avoided while networking and socializing
- be more inclined to enjoy events such as cocktail parties and other semiformal social gatherings
- be able to build on their skills for further development
