HKU students are provided with numerous learning opportunities, both inside and outside classroom; during term time and beyond semester dates.  Students can now share their creativity, talents, knowledge and skills with children who are coming from socially disadvantageous family in this semester.

CEDARS partners with ‘Blue Bus Jockey Club Together We Grow Project’ to offer this community engagement programme with the objective of providing students with service opportunity to understand the needs of children of former inmates (prisoners) and to broaden social connection by designing and running virtual outside-classroom enrichment activities from March to early April.   Students are required to attend a face-to-face pre-service training session on campus.

Objectives:

  1. To provide a platform for HKU student volunteers to tap into their talents, interests and creativity to support family members of former inmates (prisoners);
  2. To broaden social network of senior primary and junior secondary school children with disadvantageous background ; and
  3. To increase student’s awareness of challenges faced by families of former inmates (prisoners).

Service Recipients

Children of former inmates (prisoners) who are in their senior primary to junior secondary studies.

Eligibility

Full-time HKU students who can:

  1. Speak good Cantonese. Non-local students who are willing to serve Cantonese-speaking kids are also welcome;
  2. Design creative on-line activities and engage senior primary / junior secondary school children in a zoom environment;
  3. Work with other programme participants as a team;
  4. Commit to participate in 80% of the aforementioned programme activities; and
  5. Submit a learning journal upon completion of the programme.

Apply online on or before 15 February 2021. Successful applicants will be invited to attend a zoom selection interview.

Reward

Student volunteers who contribute 20 hours or more would receive a certificate and are eligible to apply for the Credit Award Scheme for Out-of-classroom Learning Experiences.
