A recent online shopping scam cost a victim nearly HK$2.5 million. Please stay alert.
Case summary:
The victim saw a fake “healthy meal ad” on Facebook and contacted the “seller” via a link in the ad. After placing an order and making a payment, the fake customer service claimed the meal was out of stock and asked to continue the refund process on WhatsApp.
On WhatsApp, the victim was asked to provide bank details. The scammer then claimed the “refund failed” and instructed the victim to log into online banking and enter an FPS ID, followed by a 4-digit code and a 6-digit code – claiming these were part of the refund process.
In reality, the 4-digit and 6-digit codes represented transfer amounts in thousands and hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong dollars. The victim, unfamiliar with online banking, believed it was a legitimate refund procedure. After several failed attempts, the scammer disappeared. The next day, the victim discovered that nearly HK$2.5 million had been drained from the bank account.
Protect yourself:
- Never enter FPS IDs or numeric codes provided by strangers – these are often disguised transfer instructions.
- Refund issues? Always contact the official customer service of the platform or merchant directly. Do not use links or phone numbers provided by strangers.
- Be wary of being redirected to WhatsApp or WeChat for refunds or payments – this is a common scam tactic.
- Enable transaction alerts and double-check any transfer before confirming.
- Use the “Scameter+” app to check suspicious links, FPS IDs, phone numbers, or platform URLs.
