WARNING:  Complacency is not an option! Don’t let yourself become the next victim of phone scams.

Unfortunately, there has been a growing number of students falling prey to these scams, resulting in significant financial losses and severe mental distress. According to the Hong Kong Police, scammers are posing as staff members of official agencies, providing real phone numbers and websites, and even using accurate personal information to gain trust.

DON’TS & DOS: Scam attempts can take many forms, including cyber romance scams, investment fraud, religious fraud, online employment traps, online shopping scams, and more. Scammers are constantly changing their tactics, so it’s important to stay vigilant and protect yourself. Never provide personal information such as passport/ identity card numbers, passwords, or bank account numbers to strangers over email or phone.

If you receive a call from an unknown number claiming to be from a bureau or large institution, it’s best to ignore it. You can also use the website https://cyberdefender.hk/en-us/ to check the risk level of unknown phone numbers. If you suspect a fraudulent call, report it directly to the Police by calling the 24-hour consultation hotline at 18222.

For more information, please visit the official Hong Kong Police website at https://www.adcc.gov.hk/. For Mainland students, you can also follow the Xiaohongshu account “Western Police District” for useful advice.

We urge everyone to remain vigilant against scams, and CEDARS is always here to help all students.
