(Cancelled) Business Networking and Social Etiquette (BNSE1/21-22)

We attend university to acquire the knowledge needed for employment which is formalized by degrees and certificates. Hand in hand with these formal academic skills, but just as important, is the acquisition of skills that help us network, socialize and make friends, acquaintances and contacts with whom we can bond, group, play and work with for happy and profitable relationships. This is not only for employment in the business and professional world but also in the wider everyday world beyond the 9 to 5 workplace. We are social animals and our success depends largely on our ability to get along and cooperate with everybody.

The purpose of this workshop is to look at the many networking and socializing conventions, “rules”, habits and attitudes we need to master in both formal and informal gatherings. Participants will investigate these conventions and practice them in an enjoyable and relaxing environment.

This workshop is both enjoyable and informative and is open to all those who feel they want to build on their social and networking skills for all walks of life.

At the end of the workshop, YOU WILL:

  • Be more conversant with the “rules” and conventions of networking and socializing in a variety of contexts other than the workplace
  • Be more confident and at ease in these environments
  • Be aware of some of the pitfalls that can be avoided while networking and socializing
  • Be more inclined to enjoy events such as cocktail parties and other semiformal social gatherings
  • Be able to build on their skills for further development

(Cancelled) Effective Public Speaking (EPS2/21-22)

This compact and entertaining workshop will cover the fundamentals of two disparate topics: Public Speaking and Networking.

Both are vital to success in many enterprises today, not only commercial enterprises but in academia and socially too. Both require practice and even though some of us are apparent naturals at Public Speaking and at Networking the less gifted will be pleased to know that acquired skills and experience are frequently more important than innate raw talent. (Even Churchill was not a born orator.)

This workshop is for those who need to get out of their shell and get some experience under their belt. The course is entirely in English and will give all participants an opportunity to role play in a range of public speaking and networking scenarios. After the 6-hour workshop, you should be more proactive and confident when you stand in the limelight “on the stump” or in a “meet and greet” session.

Note: Participants will need to wear semi-formal clothes. No shorts or flip flops please; we want to make a good first impression. (BTW…Churchill didn’t wear flip flops!) Handouts will be issued for each activity. Mobile phones should be brought to class fully charged. One activity involves the use of a smart phone video if participants have this facility available.

At the end of the workshops, YOU SHOULD:

  • Know the key factors for effective public speaking
  • Have enhanced confidence in speaking to a larger audience
  • Be more conversant with the “rules” and conventions of networking and socializing in a variety of contexts other than the workplace
  • Feel more familiar with, and be at ease in networking environments
  • Be more aware of some of the pitfalls that can be avoided while networking and socializing

Physical theatre is a tool that builds self-confidence through a feeling of trust in one’s own abilities and judgment. You will acquire vocal skills through breathwork and projection. More importantly, you will be more conscious of your physicality.

Think of the way you stand. Does it give you confidence? Experiment with different ways of standing. How does it feel?

Drama cultivates self-belief and resilience to give you tools for greater confidence in your daily life. In these two-day workshops you will learn the fundamental techniques of physical theatre and apply them to improvisation and devising your own theatrical output.
